Vinyl sales increased by 40% in 2020, Discogs reports.

As part of its annual report, The State of Discogs, the online vinyl marketplace has revealed that 11,961,998 records were sold through Discogs in the last 12 months, up 40.75% from 2019.

CDs and cassettes also reported similiar growth in sales, which were both up over 30% from 2019, and Discogs also broke down the most-collected and best-selling releases of the five most popular genres in the Database: rock, electronic, pop, jazz, and funk/soul.

At the top of 2020's best-selling electronic vinyl releases was Peggy Gou's 'Moments' EP, released in 2019 via Gudu Records, with Daft Punk, Portishead and Gorillaz also appearing in the top five. Daft Punk, Gorillaz and Portishead also appeared in the top five most-collected electronic releases, alongside Massive Attack.

The most expensive vinyl record sold in 2020 was Scaramanga Silk’s Choose Your Weapon, which is now the most expensive record ever sold on Discogs at $41,000. Prior to the astonishing sale, Discogs had revealed the 100 most expensive items purchased in the United States via its online marketplace since its launch in 2005, ranging from $2,247 to $15,000.
