VINYL SALES AT 25-YEAR HIGH IN THE UK

Last year wax surpassed three million unit sales for the first time since 1991...

Vinyl album sales in the UK surpassed three million units annually for the first time since 1991 last year, according to stats released by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

3.2 million vinyl records were sold during 2016, a 53% increase on 2015, with David Bowie’s ‘Blackstar’ the highest selling vinyl album – it sold over double 2015’s top selling vinyl album, Adele’s ‘25’.

Vinyl sales also overtook digital downloads last month (December), according to data from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

The stats show that in week 48 of 2016, £2.4 million was spent on records against £2.1 million on digital downloads, whilst in week 49, £2.9million was spent on wax, with digital sales remaining at £2.1million.
