Planet Mu to release new LP from Speaker Music, ‘of desire, longing’
An attempt to "work against the quick turnover rate of the track-based streaming economy"...
Planet Mu is preparing to release a new album from Speaker Music, AKA DeForrest Brown Jr., a name many will recognise from his theories, editorial writings, visual artwork and releases for the likes of PTP, alongside Kepla, and Foraging (with The Actual School).
'of desire, longing' takes the form of a "time-based release", with one long composition spanning both sides of the vinyl entirely. According to the release information, it's an attempt to "work against the quick turnover rate of the track-based streaming economy". The record will arrive on 6th December.
The Speaker Music project is directly influenced by the 'Rhythmanalysis' essays by philosopher and sociologist Henri Lefebvre, who specialised in critiques of everyday life. "Vibe, momentum and the 'chronopolitical' in Black music", an idea introduced by academic Kodwo Eshun, also guide the concept.
Brown Jr. was enlisted to speak on black representation across the music industry at Poland's Unsound Festival in Kraków this week. To mark the release of the new LP, he hosts an event at Artists Space in New York on 13th December.
