New Order release ‘Blue Monday’ t-shirt in support of CALM mental health charity for second year
The annual charity t-shirt arrives today, supposedly the most depressing day of the year
New Order have unveiled a second annual ‘Blue Monday’ t-shirt in support of mental health charity, CALM.
Released today, 15th January – supposedly the most “depressing day of the year” – the shirt is a collaboration between the Salford electronic legends and original Factory Records designer Peter Saville.
The t-shirt features the opening lyric, ‘How does it feel?’, from New Order’s seminal single, alongside ‘CALM 2024’, and has been designed to help open up conversations about mental health and suicide.
£10 from each shirt sale will go directly to UK mental health charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably). Check it out below and order one here.
Speaking about the project, New Order said in a statement: “Starting a conversation with somebody could be the most important conversation that person ever has. It could be life-changing. So with ‘how does it feel’ we felt, as CALM ambassadors, we had the perfect lyric and message to get out there on the 2024 edition of the CALM Blue Monday t-shirts that Peter Saville has so beautifully designed.”
CALM CEO Simon Gunning added: “Blue Monday is a track that transcends generations and one I’ve always loved – with the opening line resonating with me and so many people. The track and the meaning behind perfectly aligns with the work we do at CALM to help shred the stigma of suicide and offering support to those struggling.”
After rising to fame creating artwork for Factory Records, a label he co-founded in Manchester in 1979, Peter Saville designed the ‘Blue Monday’ sleeve for New Order in 1983.
Originally released the same year, and re-released in 1988 and 1995, ‘Blue Monday’ is the best-selling 12-inch of all time in the United Kingdom, having sold 1.16 million copies in all formats. Revisit Above & Beyond’s trance remix the song from 2020.
