LONDON NIGHT CZAR: SADIQ KHAN APPOINTS AMY LAMÉ
The New Jersey-born comic says she is “100% the Night Czar for all Londoners”
Amy Lamé has been appointed as the London Night Czar by Sadiq Khan.
The London Mayor announced Lamé’s position at Soho’s 100 Club this morning (Friday 4th November), with the new appointment promising she is “100% the Night Czar for all Londoners”.
Khan first revealed details of the new role in August, as part of his attempts to “shape London’s future as a 24-hour city”.
Originally from New Jersey, Lamé first arrived in London in 1992. Best-known for her work on BBC Radio, she’s run LGBT club night Duckie at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern for 21 years, as well as having served as Mayoress of Camden in 2010-2011, where she spent her year highlighting the history and culture of live music and nightlife in the borough.
Speaking in a press release that announced the appointment, Alan Miller of the Night Time Industries Association, said, “The role should be an ambassador and someone that cultivates trust and relationships with all 33 councils, leadership, licensing as well as planning, housing, transport and particularly policing.”
Lamé’s appointment as the new Night Czar comes shortly after the fabric closure, as well as a string of clubs being forced to close their doors in recent years including Plastic People, Vibe Bar, Dance Tunnel, Shapes, Passing Clouds and Crucifix Lane.
