Jayda G announces climate science documentary, Blue Carbon

Jayda G's documentary about music and climate science will premiere later this year.

Blue Carbon follows the GRAMMY-nominated Canadian producer and scientist Jayda Guy, who has a Masters degree in environmental toxicology, as she travels with the documentary crew to explore the oceans' potential to be a greater absorber of carbon from the Earth's atmosphere.

"Blue carbon is made up of three ecosystems: mangrove forests, saltwater marshes, and seagrass meadows, and all these ecosystems are really good at pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and putting it into the ground", Guy told DJ Mag's Ria Hylton in her DJ Mag cover interview last May. That's why the newly discovered material is being described as "one of nature’s most simple [climate change] solutions" by the documentary.

“Blue carbon is so important but people know so little about it — I want it to be as well known as the Amazon rainforest", Guy said in a press statement for the film. "It has such potential to help us combat climate change, as long as we listen to and learn from the stories of people working to protect blue carbon. It’s made me hopeful about our future and has helped me feel more connected with mother nature.”

The documentary, directed by Nicolas Brown, bridges music and science in locations like the US, Senegal, Vietnam, France, Colombia and Brazil. Guy will release a new single, 'Still Be With You', for the soundtrack, and Wu-Tang Clan's RZA will score the film, also featuring Brazilian artist Seu Jorge. It'll be released by CNN Films this year.

Jayda Guy also spoke to Hylton about her latest album, 'Guy', climate activism, the GRAMMYs, performing large crowds and more — revisit the feature here.
