DJ Cuddles has released a new single, ‘But You’, via the NEVER SEVEN imprint. Listen to the track below.

The cut is the third official release from London-based producer and DJ, Miles Mitchell (AKA Mr. Mitch) under his DJ Cuddles alias, after adopting the moniker last year to explore the more house and techno-leaning side of his palette. The project was debuted in February with the release of ‘Cuddles Tapes Vol.1’.

Speaking about the new alias, Mitchell told DJ Mag: “I’m trying to break free of any kind of shackles, I think anyone who really knew me as a DJ as Mr. Mitch will know that the sound was already very eclectic, but this is me basically coming out from the beginning and saying, ‘I’m here to make you dance.’”

“This music all started getting made post-lockdown, so it came from that feeling, like I think a lot of people were experiencing at the time, of just wanting to get back in the club again. It was good, fun dance music that I wanted to hear so it made sense for me to start making it myself,” he said.

Hinting at his shift toward a new sound back in 2021, Mitchell shared a track and music video for ‘Did We Say Goodbye’ as Mr. Mitch as an ode to the dancefloor. The video featured a range of dancefloor memories shared by fans, friends and peers via Twitter at a time when clubs were shut due to the pandemic.

Described as a “celebration of my love for R&B vocals but also a bit of a fun house banger”, ‘But You’ is a fitting introduction to DJ Cuddles’ diverse dance sound. It closely follows last month’s debut single, ‘Waiting (With Py)’, featuring London-based vocalist Jade Pybus, as well as a ravey remix of Kidkanevil’s ‘Kyomu’ alongside rising sound designer, Phasma.

The two singles will feature alongside “quite a few other different sounds” on DJ Cuddles’ upcoming debut EP. “I wanted to let people know from the beginning that this is dance music, but that doesn’t have to sound like one thing,” said Cuddles. “When I was first starting this project, I was thinking a lot about Basement Jaxx and the way they present themselves as artists. I don’t feel like they identify with any one specific genre, they’re just dance legends that could present you anything and you’re gonna be able to dance to it. I’m trying to have that same fun, fearless approach to music.”

He continued, “It’s given me a lot of freedom taking the Mr. Mitch name away because it was so heavily associated with experimentalism and innovation. It meant I was constantly trying to sound completely fresh and unlike anyone else, which had its benefits, of course, but also meant I couldn’t really be inspired by the artists I love or lean into existing stuff that sounds good.”

Earlier this year, the Gobstopper label founder and co-founder of Boxed partnered with Cheltenham Racecourse owner The Jockey Club for a unique ‘Roar Remix’ sampling the infamous ‘Cheltenham Roar’ –  a tradition that sees more than 65,000 racegoers cry out in unison as the first tape goes up.

Mitchell also returned to Rinse FM earlier this month for the first time since his residency in 2020, and for the first time as DJ Cuddles. Spinning an hour of fast-paced trance, house, and techno, the producer flexed his chops as a club-focused selector in preparation for his live debut as DJ Cuddles later this year.
