Berlin Community Radio announces it will close next month

Online radio station Berlin Community Radio has announced that it is to finis broadcasting next month.

“It is with heavy heart that we came to this decision, but we reached a dead end and spirits have fallen low after losing all funding in 2018,” the station’s founders Anastazja Moser and Sarah Miles have said in a statement announcing the decision. “We realize for many this comes as a shock and surprise but unfortunately as it is, BCR is not a sustainable model.”

The pair say that they have explored every possible avenue to keep the station running, but said that they do not believe in continuing to use free and unpaid labour to keep it operational. 

Their statement continues: “We expect some people to suggest we set up a Kickstarter or Patreon, but please understand that these would still require a huge amount of work from our side and the station has been in need of substantial injection of money for a while now, not just operating costs that could potentially be gathered by the community around it. It's time to say goodbye.”

The station will end broadcasting on February 5. Over the years, it has hosted regular shows from the likes of Palms Trax, PLO Man, Call Super, Laurel Halo and many more.

Late last year in London, a new online radio station called Foundation.FM was launched. Broadcasting from its Peckham base, the station was founded with the aim of showcasing various parts of the underground music scene and the team behind it has set out a focus on centring women and non-binary people.
