BERGHAIN UNDER THREAT FROM NEW MALL

The “family entertainment district” will also feature a music hall, bowling alley, cinema, restaurants & more...

Berghain could be under threat after plans to build a new “family entertainment district” in the area surrounding the Berlin club were revealed.

Developers there are planning a complex in the disused land by the venue, near the Mercedez Benz Arena in the Friedrichshain neighbourhood of the city. According to Electronic Beats, it will include a music hall, mall, bowling alley, cinema, restaurants and other family-orientated businesses.

It hasn’t been confirmed that Berghain will be forced to move from its current location but, in a similar scenario, the club’s predecessor Ostgut was forced to move in 2004 due to the construction of the Mercedez Benz Arena.

The club has already hit the news this year. Firstly, Adam Beyer and Ida Engberg got married last month (May), before holding their afterparty there. That was before a website called berghaintrainer.com surfaced, which uses facial recognition technology and voice control to decide whether you will get in at a virtual version of the venue, which was recently voted No. 16 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs poll.
