Selections: Nightwave

In our new regular feature, Selections, we invite DJs, producers and label heads to dig into their digital crates and share the contents of their Bandcamp collections. This week, Glasgow-based DJ and producer Nightwave steps up with 10 of her recent Bandcamp selections, spanning charity EPs and label compilations, to face-melting techno and acid belters straight out of Scotland

Record stores and clubs around the world are shut, and opportunities to find new music out in the wild have been ripped from under our feet as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. While hearing new music played out by your favourite DJs will have to be put on hold due to these unprecedented circumstances, it’s never been easier, or more important, to support the artists and labels putting out EPs, albums and compilations in the midst of all the madness.

With tour cancellations and festival postponements leaving many members of the international electronic music community out of pocket, Bandcamp has become an even more vital platform for supporting the music you love, with 80% of all sales from the online music store going directly to artists and labels. Last month, the platform announced it would be waiving its revenue share for all sales for one day, and on 20th March, took no cut from purchases made. In total, $4.3 million was spent on music over the course of 24 hours, all going straight to the creators. On 1st of May, it waived its revenue share again for 24 hours, raising $7 million for artists and labels. With two more Bandcamp days lined up for 5th June and 3rd July, it’s time to start adding releases to your Wishlist to grab on the day to ensure all of your spending goes directly to the artists and labels you love!

In our new regular series. Selections, we’re inviting DJs, producers and label heads to dig into their digital crates and share the contents of their Bandcamp collections. In lieu of opportunities to discover new records on the dancefloor, Selections – along with radio shows and mixes – will give you the chance to nab sounds from the crates of tastemakers, and support the artists behind them while you’re at it. Win-win, right?

This week, DJ, producer and good vibes advocate, Nightwave, steps up with 10 recent additions to her Bandcamp purchases page. The Slovenia-born artist moved to London in her formative years, partying at nights like The End and Plastic People, where she explored garage, dubstep and grime on top her homegrown love of jungle, house and techno. After a change in moniker and relocation to Glasgow in Scotland, after finding out about the city's diverse scene through imprints like Numbers and LuckyMe, Nightwave cemented herself within Glasgow's circuit not just with her productions, but also with a party residency called Nightrave at La Cheetah.

Nightwave's productions are an amalgamation of Chicago and Detroit house and techno, expanded with psychedelic synths, breaks and hard drums, with the producer charting releases on the likes of UTTU, Houndstooth, and Dixon Avenue Basement Jams. With her love for diverse sounds in mind, Nightwave's Bandcamp selections this week span charity EPs and label compilations, to face-melting techno and acid belters straight out of Scotland. Check them out below.

Nite Fleit
'Steel City Dance Discs Vol 15' [SSDD]

"Heat as usual from Steel City Dance Discs! Nite Fleit is one of my favourite producers and this record is just perfect. ‘All new low’ is just amazing and when In first heard it I thought “F*ck, I wish I made that!” Can’t wait to play this loud after lockdown."

VA
'Care4Life' [Above Board Projects]

"Very impressive compilation supporting NHS Charities with 45 stellar artists including Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada, Jamie Jones, Nathan Fake, B.Traits...I contributed a track called ‘Sadhana’, a bit of electro with Sanskrit mantras over it, as you do!"

DK
'The Goddess Is Dancing' [Good Morning Tapes]

"I really, really, REALLY love Good Morning Tapes and this record is simply stunning. It’s influenced by an ancient Vietnamese ritual called ‘Hau Dong’ and like all Good Morning releases takes us on a beautiful deep inner journey. I feel the spiritual aspect of music is often neglected so I really appreciate and adore what this label’s work."

Fear-E
'Melters Vol 1'

"My good pal Scott is hands down a wizard when it comes to banging tunes, he never disappoints and it’s sometimes hard to not just play all his productions when I DJ. Fear-E has the ravey golden touch and these indeed are melters!"

VA
'Dear Green Space' [Outer Zone Records]

"Outer Zone is Glasgow’s La Cheetah Club in-house label and our family quickly got organised and came together to launch a charity compilation supporting The Grenfell Foundation and CERS Scotland. It features a host of local talent like Clouds, Modus, The Burrell Connection, AISHA...I contributed a trippy arp heavy tune ‘Wizard Of La Cheetah’. All proceeds go to the chosen charities."

Overland
'Void Function' [Sweat Equity NYC]

"I’ve been following Overland since her brilliant record on Naive and this new release is just as heavy. I really love how her productions expand and the melodies evolve. Can’t wait to hear more!"

VA
'Scuffed Presents Vol 004' [Scuffed Recordings]
"I love receiving Scuffed promos, I know it’s going to be something original, fun but heavy and dance floor ready. The latest collection includes remixes by Nikki Nair, Stones Taro, Ian DPM and Glances."

Posthuman
'ILA 021' [I Love Acid]
"Makes me so happy to see this record sell out as soon as it came out, Josh nailed it withe the acid belters as per usual."

Rove Ranger
'101010' [Lobster Theremin]

"This record has been out for a little while now but I have to include it as I’ve rinsed it sooo much. Lobster can do no wrong but I particularly love this one, it’s kept me motivated and charged up during this weird quarantine time!"

VA
'Stimulus Swim' [Hyperdub/Adult Swim]

"Last but not least...mighty Hyperdub. This wicked compilation includes Jessy Lanza, Silvia Kassel, DJ Tre, Loraine James, Scratcha DVA...as always highly original and engaging."
