In this series, Selections, we invite DJs, producers and label heads to dig into their digital crates and share the contents of their Bandcamp collections. While hearing new music played out by your favourite selectors has been put on hold as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s never been easier, or more important, to support the artists and imprints releasing tracks, albums, EPs and comps in the midst of all the madness. In lieu of opportunities to discover new records on the dancefloor, Selections will give you the chance to nab sounds from the crates of tastemakers, and support the people behind them while you’re at it. Win-win, right?

This week, as she marks the release of her debut EP, ‘Planet J’, on Astral Black, Jossy Mitsu highlights some of her recent favourites, from heavyweight club belters to smooth, nocturnal R&B.

On ‘Planet J’, the Birmingham-born, London-based 6 Figure Gang member and Rinse FM resident alchemises the bass-heavy elements of contemporary UK club music with the driving forward momentum of Detroit techno. From the frosty bass-pressure of ‘Odyssey’ and the turbocharged energy of ‘Turismo’, to the acid techno pulse of ‘1997’, it’s a striking introduction to the artist’s dancefloor productions. For more stripped back grooves, her recent experimental hip-hop EP ‘Wet Play’ as CELIINE is also well worth your time. You can buy 'Planet J' through Astral Black's Bandcamp.

LSDXOXO
‘Dying For It’ [FLOORGASM]

“I can’t even explain how much I am in love with this track. It samples one of my favourite viral moments of all time, and LSDXOXO came through with a raw and uncompromising banger as always. I cannot wait to hear this at peak time in a London club.”

Ikonika
‘Apply Fog’

“Ikonika combines her beloved signature style with drill and grime on this release and it generates such a captivating sound. ‘Apply Fog’ is my favourite – I love the fullness of this track with its 808s, cymbals and synths that are both haunting and angelic at the same time.”

Maya Q
‘Belief’ [Scuffed Recordings]

“It’s been so inspiring to see how quickly Scuffed Recordings have managed to cement their position as a leading UK club label. The compilation features four exciting producers, and Co-select’s Maya Q really delivers on this fun, punchy and heavily percussive track.”

INVT
‘QUEMADURA’

“INVT are a super-talented production duo from Miami whose music I have not been able to stop playing! Every release they put out has been made with such quality and consistency that their combination of broken percussion, rolling bass, acid and psychedelic pads is instantly recognizable.”

Otik
‘Quarter Truth’

“I’m always excited to see what Otik does next! The beautiful soundscapes he creates over rain-like, rolling percussion, glitchy elements and carefully placed vocals make for a very special project.”

Color Plus
‘Logg’

“I’m impatiently waiting for the day I’m in a dark, smoky club to play this exact kind of track. Color plus is so talented it’s silly! Grime meets club music effortlessly on this tune, and his extensive back catalogue speaks for itself.”

DJ Girl
‘Tunnel Vision’ [Planet Euphorique]

“I’m currently living for this ferociously hard-hitting EP from DJ Girl, with four unadulterated, heavyweight belters. Tunnel Vision’s panning, rumbling drums have been programmed to perfection and would destroy any club sound system.”

Obwigszyh
‘ خدعة اسهل’ [AM 01:09:69 JUN-05-1970]

“This diverse compilation gives me intense outer space/alien vibes and I absolutely love it. This unreal track from Hungarian techno and experimental producer Obwigszyh stands out as one of my favourites. All proceeds from this V/A go to the Lebanese Red Cross.”

Special Request
‘Pull Up (Tim Reaper Remix)’ [Hooversound]

“The unstoppable Tim Reaper is one of the most highly respected producers in the UK. He manages to incorporate such beautiful, euphoric melodies with shattering jungle breaks and bass, and his 4x4 and darker tracks are equally as impressive. Few could take on remixing Special Request and execute it this well!”

Ojerime
‘Give It Up To Me’

“I’ve found that Ojerime’s music has really resonated with me during lockdown and this is a mixtape I keep coming back to. Her beautifully layered vocals on top of smooth-as-hell beats make the perfect ‘night rider music’, and have inspired some of the instrumentals I’ve made under my alias.”
