Selections: Jordan Nocturne

In this series, Selections, we invite DJs, producers and label heads to dig into their digital crates and share the contents of their Bandcamp collections. While hearing new music played out by your favourite selectors remains largely on hold as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s never been easier, or more important, to support the artists and imprints releasing tracks, albums, EPs and comps in the midst of all the madness. In lieu of opportunities to discover new records on the dancefloor, Selections will give you the chance to nab sounds from the crates of tastemakers, and support the people behind them while you’re at it. Win-win, right?

This week, Belfast native and scene champion Jordan Nocturne shines a light on an array of club cuts - from euphoric Italo and acid-tinged bangers, to dub edits of Talking Heads. The DJ, producer and Nocturne label head has been at the heart of the Northern Irish scene for almost two decades, nurturing new talent at Belfast club night The Night Institute, and becoming a staple on the line-up at the city's beloved AVA Festival & Conference.

After launching his label Nocturne back in 2016, Jordan most-recently debuted the Nocturne Edits series — which has seen support from Midland, Gerd Janson and Erol Alkan — and launched From Belfast With Love, a charity compilation series. Away from his projects which are closer to home, Jordan's touring schedule sees him make stops in Berlin, New York, Japan & London, and recording mixes for Truants, Ninja Tune, DJ Mag and Beats In Space, alongside Midland. Earlier this month, Jordan released his latest EP, 'Gemini Boy' — featuring a remix from Studio Barnhus' Kornel Kovacs — which traverses his signature party-starting styles of electro, disco and synth-pop.

Sam Pyper
'Rivers (Cartin Remix)' [Extended Play]

"The Extended Play label is a true incubator for electronic music in Ireland, and Sam Pyper & Cartin are two of the next generation of producers from the island. The Cartin remix of River's is just phenomenal."

Chinaski
'Energy 1 (DJ Overdose Rebeat Mix)' [Dischi Autunno]

"I'm a big fan of that EBM sound that Jennifer Cardini's Dischi Autunno label does so well. It's got the euphoria of Italo without the thinness that a lot of the recent Italo sound has. It reminds me of starting out as a trance DJ in my teens, but with a much rougher edge to the drums. The chops in this DJ Overdose Mix are right up my Strasse."

Deux Control
'Freaks' [Höga Nord]

"My mate Timmy Stewart introduced me to the Hoga Nord label - proper late-night wonky stuff here on 'Freaks'. This one reminds me of a lot of stuff I loved that was coming out in the late 2000's."

A Psychic Yes
'Stone Sound' [Tech Startup]

"The percussion in this is otherworldly. You can't not dance to this."

Michael E
'Membrane' [ULTRAMAJIC]

"I first heard of Michael E through Jimmy Edgar's label Ultramajic. This Plastikman-influenced tool is the sort of track I'm really looking forward to getting into a dark club and playing again, the tension in these tracks lends well to long mixes, and moments of tension."

AQXDM
'Leisure Techno' [Houndstooth]

"I generally switch off with a lot of breaks stuff when it gets a bit too blokey or trainspotter, but this one by AQXDM is a lot of fun."

Anunaku
'Luminosa' [AD 93]

"I always look forward to checking out new releases by Anunaku. Every track sounds completely unique while at the same time being instantly recognisable as him. I think there'll be a few sweaty post-apocalyptic hugs to this when we get a chance."

Whitesquare
'Carte Blanche' [Life And Death]

"Whitesquare is a pretty diverse producer, but this one is him in big room mode on DJ Tennis' Life & Death. With outdoor events seeming the most likely to go ahead first, I can see myself playing this at a festival somewhere, sometime. Fingers crossed!"

Akio Nagase
'Global Acid'

"Big acid house on this one from Akio Nagase and it works so well. Hard to pick a favourite here but 'Saigon Acid' is probably the most dancefloor-friendly."

Talking Heads
'Burning Down the House (Tech Support Dub Version)'

"I don't care how many times it's been done, Burning Down the House holds a lot of memories for me, and Brighton producer and all-around nice fella Tech Support has given it a good old rub."
