In this series, Selections, we invite DJs, producers and label heads to dig into their digital crates and share the contents of their Bandcamp collections. While hearing new music played out by your favourite selectors has been put on hold as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s never been easier, or more important, to support the artists and imprints releasing tracks, albums, EPs and comps in the midst of all the madness. In lieu of opportunities to discover new records on the dancefloor, Selections will give you the chance to nab sounds from the crates of tastemakers, and support the people behind them while you’re at it. Win-win, right?
This week, ABSOLUTE. spotlights sunkissed house and breaks, hypnotic electro and high-energy rhythms from the likes of Octo Octa, India Jordan, Mall Grab, Traxman and DJ Overdose: an electrifying round-up of sounds tailor-made for dancefloors the London DJ will be playing to once the clubs reopen and festivals get rolling. Despite the pandemic, ABSOLUTE. has been building his name as a producer and DJ in the past year, most recently in his collaboration with vocalist BKLAVA on the nostalgic rave cut, ‘Fired Up (ABSOLUTE. Edit)’, and on his own recent singles ‘Piano Theory’ and ‘Fauna’. His summer is taking shape too, with his ‘Wonderland’ mixtape set to drop on 7th May, and a socially distanced launch party at Islington Assembly Hall scheduled for 19th June. “Have so much respect for Octo Octa, she always hits a sweet spot of nostalgic breaks vibe and just the right amount of energy and nuances that evolve throughout the track, like a beautiful story that I want to be a part of. ‘Goddess Calling’ is one of my favourites so far.”
“Adore this track from Dauwd, feels so warm with just the right amount of analog distortion throughout, gorgeous live drums, and jumping bass and a spoken word make this one of my current favs.”
“I really love the energy on this one and the ‘open your heart’ message, piercing warm arps combine with analog drums, then a low driving bass comes in pushes everything forward, completed by lots of reverse beat details. I’m sold. Played this on my residency stream for Maya Jane Coles and had to also include in a recent cover mix.”
