Premiere: Jurango 'Slow Wheeze'

Bristol’s Jurango arrives on re:ni and Laksa’s label with four high-tempo club hybrids

Jurango will release a new EP, ‘Isle of Crass’, via re:ni and Laksa’s recently launched re:lax label this week. Listen to ‘Slow Wheeze’, and watch its accompanying visualiser, below.

The Bristol artist’s latest four-tracker follows a recent split EP with Glances on Pseudonym Records and his 2022 track, ‘Junglizer’, which featured Dar es Salaam’s Jamaica Mnanda and felt like a new high water mark for his bass-soaked club workouts. This creative momentum is pushed even further here, as Jurango explores higher tempos while retaining all the rhythmic complexity that’s made his releases for labels like Livity Sound and [re]sources stand out. Inspired by the experimental works of Rian Treanor and Djrum, and the fast-paced drums of the Nyege Nyege Tapes catalogue and Tanzania’s singeli genre, here’s a suite of hard-as-fuck genre hybrids that’ll send dancefloors straight into a spin cycle.

‘Slow Wheeze’ peppers its halftime d&b pulse with nimble footwork percussion, glitching vox and deep, dubby atmospherics.‘Sleeper Hold’ plays a similar trick, with wriggly rhythms and an added splash of menace, primed for a mid-set mood shift. On the B-Side, Jurango flexes his skills in the Timedance school of UK techno, all galloping drums and psychedelic swirls, tailor-made for massive systems.

The singeli influence really shines on the closing title track, drenching its dizzyingly quick beat in slippery bass zaps and razor sharp shards of distortion. As finishing moves go, it’s a fierce one. It’ll leave you gasping for breath, and ready for Jurango’s next level up.

This Saturday, 21st October, a launch party celebrating the release of ‘Isle of Crass’ will take place in South London’s Ormside Projects, featuring sets from Jurango, re:ni b2b Laksa and k means. Tickets are available here
