On Our Radar: The Music You Must Hear!

Running the musical gamut from minimal techno to abstract hip-hop, dubstep to Baile funk, via ska, electro pop, house and Balearica, Sonar truly has something for everyone. Here, we highlight some of the astounding acts you can't afford to miss...

Sónar 2008 Espanol

Can Matt Edwards, aka Radio Slave, really do no wrong? Not content with simply knocking out the funkiest techno and most mind-twisting house with his productions, remixes and Rekids label, now he's teamed up with Joel Martin for Balearic, cosmic soundtrack project QUIET VILLAGE.
Their album 'Silent Movie' is a cinematic trip into the mind movies of the pair, where dense layers of samples invoke wave-lapped shores; zonked, opiated disco-scapes, wreathed in gossamer string threads bleed into psychedelic funk rock; and the music of Martin Denny, Lindstrøm, Writing on the Wall and Manuel Gottsching are all summoned in ghostly form.
Digging deep in dusty old crates for library records and obscure soundtracks, Quiet Village's patchwork resurrection of forgotten obscure sounds in their own image is something that needs to be heard. No-one else is making this kind of uneasy listening, future lounge infused-beats at the moment - make sure you catch this mercurial duo.

If you like your beats and bleeps with a side order of aggy bassline filth and ghetto gruffness, then DIPLO is your man. An intrepid explorer of the world's most underground, raw and tough dance music scenes, this polymorphous crusader has brought niche sounds like Kuduro house, B-more, Baile funk and crunk to a wider audience with his wicked, incredibly varied DJs sets and productions.
Don't get it twisted - Diplo has no truck with genre pigeonholes - you're just as likely to hear him drop Marc Houle's über dark minimal meisterwerk 'Bay of Figs' as you are to hear Benga and Coki's 'Night' in his sets. And with productions for MIA, Kano and Bonde Do Role, he's running tings. Where can he go next?

Bringing the sound of Angola's underground phenomenon - the lascivious, grinding Kuduro house - to the wider world are Lisbon's BURAKA SOM SISTEMA. DJ Riot, Joao Pekeno (aka Lil' John) and Conductor are bringing the bass-heavy, Portuguese ragga-inflected flows, breakbeat avalanches and clumping house to bear with their own take on the genre, in anticipation of forthcoming opus 'Black Diamond'. Get to know.
They'll be rocking the Red Bull Music Academy Radio Showcase, alongside Detroit's most feted son THEO PARRISH. His slew of super-limited, next level techno, house and soul-jazz excavations are always deeper than the Continental Shelf, spacier than Alpha Centauri and funkier than some Gorgonzola that's been out in the sun too long. Tunes like 'Falling Up', 'Brain' and 'Nitedrive' have already entered the realms of legend: you know you need to see this absolute don.

On the downlow, PANTHA DU PRINCE is a name you need to familiarize yourselves with if you don't know him already. Part of the Dial Records alumni, PDP is the nom de plume of Hendrik Weber, whose intricately detailed, headphone techno incorporates the bittersweet melodies of early Aphex Twin, the melancholia of shoe-gazing rock and mystic, otherworldly FX to transport you into his hermetically sealed sound world.
Album 'This Bliss' is one of the most significant electronic albums in years - you'll want to catch him alongside fellow astral traveler EFDEMIN at the Dial Records showcase. This is the kind of music that comes into its own played LOUD.

Synth Soul Wizards
Fans of electro pop's golden age are in for a treat - synth soul wizards YAZOO have reformed, and are to play a special show for the electronic festival. The original duo of Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke are immortalized for their stunning, emotive and crucially, downright danceable songs, and are more relevant now than ever, with Booka Shade featuring the classic 'Situation' on their recent 'DJ Kicks' mix.
Clarke's bright, splashing synths and Moyet's sonorous, beautiful voice is a potent combination indeed, and you can't front on tunes like 'Don't Go' and 'Only You'.
They're touring now around the release of new four CD boxset 'In Your Room', but who knows when they'll next perform? Make sure you take this opportunity to catch 'em.

Taking the baton from Yazoo and surging into a new bright synth pop dawn, CHRISTOPHER D. ASHLEY is the Sunday Best signing making serious noise with his debut record, 'Cruel Romantics'. With bass propulsion courtesy of Keith Tenniswood, aka Radioactive Man, his lyrically astute tales of broken hearts and relationships come tempered with the kind of melodies Depeche Mode would kill for, and crisp electro beats. Destined to blow up, for sure.

Minimal Masters
Those hankering after a little of that über-coolische minimal techno need look further than the M-nus Records showcase. Celebrating 10 years of their pioneering imprint, M-nus are in fine fettle, and they welcome a performance from HEARTTHROB, whose debut album 'Dear Painter, Paint Me' has been rinsing out the DJmag office for some time.
The showcase will also feature DJ sets from techno queen MAGDA, GAISER, MARC HOULE, TROY PIERCE and, of course, minimal overlord RICHIE HAWTIN, who's been on firing form of late.

Another techno exponent and M-nus affiliate that you need to see is DUBFIRE. Ali Shirazinia's rise to become the new minimal master has been meteoric, with his productions and DJ sets wowing in equal measure. With his 'Terror Planet Remix' of Radio Slave's 'Grindhouse' threatening to obliterate 2008, there could be no better time to find out what all the fuss is about.
And who could forget Chilean man-of-the-moment RICARDO VILLALOBOS? Fresh from a gig entertaining troops in Iraq (bizarre but true!) his productions and DJ skills are at their peak right now - why not indulge in some of his ethno percussive techno and spare, mini cuts?

Dubstep Tip
If dubstep is your bag, then Radio 1's showcase is the place to be. That warrior empress of uncompromising, gritty rhythms herself, MARY ANNE HOBBS, will be dropping the freshest cyber-crunk and robo-stomp beats, and those all-important seismic, earthquake inducing basslines, soundsystem stylee. Her Breezeblock show for the station has always been a one-stop shop for the baddest tracks in town, and lately Hobbs has been championing the Croydon-born sound almost exclusively.

Meanwhile, making the dubwise connection even more explicit, MALA is the man who'll be joining the dots between dub's past and future, exhibiting the lineage between reggae and dubstep in excelsis. As part of Digital Mystikz, he's been instrumental in shaping and directing the music, both with productions and the forward-facing DMZ nights at Mass, London. This will be a chance for him to throw down the toughest new dubplates and you don't want to miss that.
Operating at the fringes of the genre, SHACKLETON is another name to grace the stage at the Radio 1 showcase. Like his label Skull Disco, this DJ/producer specializes in a singular sonic template, which incorporates Arabic muezzin calls, tribal percussion, Basic Channel techno into a heady, dubby miasma. His classics 'Stalker' and 'Blood On My Hands' (the latter famously remixed by Ricardo Villalobos) redrew the blueprint for dubstep, bringing it closer to techno than ever. His set is guaranteed to be special - one to watch.

Flying High
Hip-hop is in a state of crisis presently, with the mainstream a tired parody of its self and the underground obsessed with recycled, boring beats and keep it real clichés. None of this seems to have bothered FLYING LOTUS, though - the L.A. based maverick producer whose radical take on the sound sees it sailing off into uncharted waters.
With his new album 'Los Angeles' for Warp Records ready to drop like a bomb, Steven Ellison (great nephew of astral jazzer Alice Coltrane) specializes in submerged, sublimated slow-roll boom-bap beats, sounding like Aphex or Squarepusher bumping along in a lowrider through Compton.
Mainly instrumental, Flying Lotus' beats and soundscapes are highly atmospheric narcotic creations, with cuts like 'GNG BNG' clattering along on roughshod, D.I.Y. drums, with blasts of sitar adding to the sultry mood. Truly original, Flying Lotus is the real sound of the future.

Staying with the hip-hop theme, ANTI-POP CONSORTIUM is another crew to catch. A four-piece of cerebral rhyme terrorists, you can tell by their name these guys aren't up for compromise. Accordingly, they lace their fluid, incisive poetry with wicked electronic rhythms that'll appeal to Warp-worshipping cats and hip-hop hardrocks alike.
And if you still can't get enough of that badunkadunk wiggling stuff, Janeiro Jarel's SHAPE OF BROAD MINDS are the types who'll be serving up those psyche hop, sampladelic dusty beats and slick rhymes.

Speaking of originality, you'd be hard pressed to find a more unusual act than Congolese avant-Afro industrialists KONONO NO.1. Translating the native folk styles of the Congo's Bazombo people, using traditional instruments like the likembe thumb piano but hooked up to vast amplification devices, and 'playing' old car parts, they project a tough, ultra loud industrial electronica, bridging the gap between the past and the future, folk and industrial.
Their acclaimed albums for Crammed Discs, 'Congotronics' and 'Live at Couleur Café', have got DJs like Gilles Peterson excited, and now's your chance to find out why.

House Music Architects
As far as legendary DJs go, they don't come much bigger than FRANKIE KNUCKLES. House music architect, remix alchemist, incredible selector: all these things and more are true of Chicago's elder statesman, who's back in full effect after cutting a phenomenal remix of Hercules and Love Affair's 'Blind'. If you want the very essence of soulful, fresh house, you can't go wrong with this Def Mix master.
Taking the 4/4 beat into deeper waters, the Freerange Records mob will be in the area too, label boss JIMPSTER (Jamie Odell) and MILTON JACKSON representing with the impossibly lush, aquatic deep and tech-house that the label's become known for. Hope that Jimpster plays his massive and brilliantly named 'Dangly Panther' track! Staying in the deep end of the house pool, BEN WATT is another dude to dig. His label Buzzin' Fly is rinsin' it out, the '5 Golden Years in the Wilderness' compilation ready to blow - he's bound to be on fire with tasty tech-house and lush electronic grooves.

Spank It!
When it comes to sex-obsessed, booty bass and electro rap lewdness, you can't really beat SPANK ROCK. Those giants of the ever-growing B-more phenomenon - which blends shredded 'Think' breaks, crude keyboards and shouty "shake that ass" rhymes - have transcended their origins, and led by none-more-cool producer Armani XXXchange are combining everything from disco to synth-pop, techno to funk to create something entirely their own. Having dropped a sick mix album for Fabric, and now signed to Domino, they're geared up for world domination. Watch them soar!
Cut from the same cloth, Ed Banger dude DJ MEHDI is the Parisian hip-hop producer turned house and electro don who'll be facing off against Kanye West's DJ and electro addict A-TRAK, for a heavyweight beat battle of epic proportions.
To add to the frisson, hotter than-hot Chicagoan rhymestress KID SISTER, fresh from her star turn on Sinden and The Count's 'Beeper', is there to keep the party hyped while the two selectors bust out the tracks.

Master Blasters
It would be churlish indeed not to mention distorto-drum master blasters JUSTICE. Their peerless take on sandpaper rough, crunching slabs of electrofunk evil, eardrum buzz fuzz and tongue-in-cheek disco fun is an adrenalin syringe to the heart when they play live, taking on the moshpit dynamics of a rock gig, with blasts of Metallica for good measure. Having honed the new show to perfection, it's time to experience the full visceral rush.
It's well worth catching more of the Ed Banger gang too, with big boss Pedro Winter, aka BUSY P, KRAZY BALDHEAD, NIL and SEBASTIAN all repping Paris to the fullest. Sebastian in particular is on fire, having just cut the pure ruffage of 'Dog': imagine death metal electro cut up and you're getting close...

If you like your tracks with oomph and a side order of noise thrown in, then EROL ALKAN is your man. Immensely versatile, but always gritty, Alkan's DJ sets can incorporate everything from '60s rock oddities to proggy disco, but are always wrapped up in layers of acidic, brain battering electro fierceness to let you truly bug out. Keeping the kids dancing indeed!
Rave savant BOYS NOIZE, too, is scheduled to rip the festival in half, and his broiling sonic warfare and hardcore madness is bound to send us all into apoplexy.
Those electro rockin' Belgians SOULWAX are preparing to detonate Barcelona, flushed from the success of their remix collection. Expect new music in anticipation of a forthcoming record, and plenty of huge synth riffs and crashing drums.

Back in effect after a period in the wilderness, one of electronica's true originals LEILA returns to the stage with a brand spanking new record. Having cut the classic, underrated 'Like Weather' and 'Courtesy of Choice' albums, the Iranian-born producer is back with a new record for Warp, 'Blood, Looms and Blooms', featuring an array of guests including Terry Hall (of legends The Specials) and Maria Topley-Bird, famed for her work with Tricky and solo material. Her unique way of uniting the threads of soulful vocals with icy tones and clanking rhythms should make her performance a definite Sonar highlight.
Another electronic monolith to re-emerge with a stunning new longplayer, BLACK DOG have to be seen to believed. The mesmeric, disquieting rhythms of their new epic 'Radio Scarecrow' are some of the best tracks they've ever done, so grab 'em while you've got the chance.

Glitterball Groove
Maybe some of that glitterball groove is more your speed, and perhaps PILOOSKI and the DIRTY SOUNDSYSTEM are gonna be right up your street. These French re-edit freaks like nothing better than meticulously splicing and dicing obscure cosmic disco jewels into dancefloor devastating gems, and Pilooski's huge version of Frankie Valli's 'Beggin'' last summer should give you an indication that these guys mean business when it comes to moving a crowd.

A new day, a new genre. We're used to styles coming and going in dance music, but here's one you may not have heard of (yet). Skwee - a micro scene led by two labels from Finland and Sweden, FLOGSTA DANSHALL and HARMÖNIA - are leading the charge, fusing r&b and electrofunk to create a curious but brilliant hybrid. If you remain unconvinced, then you'll just have to check out their double team label showcase, won't you?
Acts including RIGAS DEN ANDRE, PAVAN, JOXAREN, DANIEL SAVIO, RANDY BARRACUDA, MESAK, SLA and EERO JOHANNES are all due to play, which should give you ample opportunity to acquaint yourself with the fledgling sound.

And now for something completely different. If you want scotch eggs thrown at you while sinking under the weight of a drum & bass and computer bleep barrage, may we present to you Japan's unhinged DJ SCOTCH EGG.
The Load Records man from Osaka, who specializes in upsetting the status quo and being an iconoclastic drumcore madman, ain't your typical live act. And if you're lucky you'll get a tasty snack into the bargain, too!
Elsewhere, be sure to be stealthy, and check Ninja Tune's delirious dude DAEDELUS. His new record 'Love To Make Music To' is a glorious mish-mash of rave splurge bass, crunked-out raps, sweet soul croon and insane hyperactive beats - L.A. by way of hardcore era UK.

Finally, special mention must go to all-round dance colossus EWAN PEARSON, whose versatility clearly knows no bounds. Variously known for pseudonyms Maas, World of Apples and Partial Arts, and with a cavalcade of great remixes to his name (who could forget his re-rub of Seelenluft's 'Manila' or the spine-tingling joys of his Cortney Tidwell treatment?) last year's phenomenal Fabric blend, and now the brilliant Misericord label, he's the man. Welcome to Sonar!

For details of where to catch the above acts at Sonar, check sonar.es for further information. Full festival passes are €170, available from the website, with day tickets €30 and night €48. See you there!

A saber qué vendrá después.

A ritmo disco
