DJ School For Girls

A special DJ course has been launched just for girls at Point Blank music college in London.

This year only one female spinner made it into DJmag's Top 100 DJs poll, a sign that in 2006, DJing and dance music is still very much a male dominated industry.

It is still quite difficult for girls to get into DJing and be taken seriously, not least because blokes might take the piss a bit.

As such, London-based music production college Point Blank has launched a female-only DJ course, to give aspiring female jocks the chance to learn deck skills in an approachable environment.

Point Blank's David Reid said, "We've been teaching DJ courses for over 10 years but we've noticed a substantial upturn in enrolments in recent months and a large proportion of them have been from women.

"A room full of guys can sometimes be a bit intimidating, so we decided to offer a female only course and the response has been fantastic."

The two-day crash course is aimed at beginners and will be taught by female breakbeat spinner Tracie Storey, better known as 10 Sui.

She has shared the decks with the likes of Josh Wink, Funk D'Void, Silicone Soul and Coldcut and has been heralded in the past as 'The First Lady of Breaks'.
