DJ Rashad's estate signs exclusive publishing deal with Waxploitation Records

LA label promises to protect legacy of much missed Chicago footwork pioneer...

When Chicago’s DJ Rashad, one of the leading lights of the city’s footwork sound, passed away in 2014, aged just 34, it sent reverberations around the world.

Now his estate has signed an exclusive publishing deal with Waxploitation Records, the LA label which has released music from artists including Danger Mouse, Gnarls Barkley, Black Moth Super Rainbow and MF Doom since being founded in the mid-90s by Jeff Antebi.

"Seeing where hip-hop and electronic music, and even pop music, has evolved in the last few years, DJ Rashad's presence is strongly felt, and he's dearly missed," said Antebi. "We're hoping to keep his legacy thriving for many years to come."

Rashad enjoyed a close relationship with the UK, with labels Hyperdub and Planet Mu helping to popularise his music outside its small native scene. He was a founding member of the Teklife Records crew who include long-term collaborator DJ Spinn, DJ Taye, Gant-Man and more.
