Calvin Harris: “There's amazing, amazing house music coming out of the UK right now”

The Scottish DJ/producer was interviewed on Apple Music’s Beats 1 again last week...

Calvin Harris has admitted that he feels he is doing a “disservice” to himself by not allowing the influence of UK house music feed into his productions more.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 show on Apple Music, the Scottish superstar producer praised the calibre of house music that is coming out of the UK’s electronic scenes at the moment, saying that he regrets not continuing to draw on the ‘90s house sounds that have previously influenced him in his career.

“You know there's amazing, amazing house music coming out of the UK right now,” said the LA-based artist, who is currently holding down a residency in Las Vegas until 2020 valued at £200 million. “That has inspired me a lot and I love being there and listening to it and that kind of made me realise I'm doing a disservice to myself not drawing the influences that I've always drawn from like '90s house which is my main go-to, as far as influences go.”

Those influences will be familiar to anyone who remembers Harris’ 2007 LP ‘I Created Disco’, but the producer has gone onto to become one of the biggest names in EDM with recent releases including 2017’s collab heavy ‘Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1’.

In the same interview, he also talked to Lowe about how much he enjoyed collaborating with UK pop superstar Dua Lipa, saying, “It was lovely. She come round the house...One of the very few sessions where I literally, I mean nowadays with vocals and all that I like to have an engineer, he can record and chop them up because it's the hardest part of the job for me, but this time I just did it all myself. It was nice, had a little cup of tea. Lovely.”

Harris appeared on Lowe’s Beats 1 show only two months ago to discuss EDM, Las Vegas, festivals and his collaboration with PartyNextDoor, saying “I haven’t done any meaningful festivals for years”.
