BBC have opened up their sound FX archive for free download. The library contains over 16,000 samples from across the decades, mostly consisting of foley and soundscapes. Though the files are free to download, they are offered under a RemArc License, meaning they can only be used for research, educational or personal projects.

As a source of creative inspiration the archive is hugely valuable with everything from the sound of a chocolate machine to a power saw, footsteps and animal sounds, African markets and the sound of hands being washed in a bucket. You can find the archive here. If you're looking for more music-based sounds, NI have just launched their sample subscription service Sounds.com
